📬 Postal Rate Basics

Standard vs Non-Standard Mail

Postal rates are determined by the size and weight of mail. Standard mail offers the cheapest basic rate but has size and weight restrictions. Non-standard mail allows more flexibility in size and weight but costs more.

 • Standard Mail (Cheapest): 14cm × 9cm, 1cm thick, up to 25g for 84 yen (as of 2024)
 • Standard Mail (Next): 25g-50g for 94 yen
 • Non-Standard Mail (Regular): 30cm × 25cm, 5cm thick, up to 1kg from 120 yen
 • Non-Standard Mail (Large): Larger sizes from 200 yen (can be expensive)

Postage Covered by Stamps

Typically, stamps can cover basic rates for standard and non-standard (regular) mail. Special services like express or registered mail require additional fees.

This tool is ideal for calculating stamp combinations for basic standard and non-standard mail rates.

When Postal Rates Change

Postal rates are revised periodically. While we list current 2024 rates, please check the official Japan Post website for the latest rates. Rate changes may require combining old and new stamps.

🪙 Stamp Denominations & Usage

Commonly Used Stamp Denominations

While Japan Post offers various denominations, the following are most commonly used in practice.

Denomination Use Notes
1, 5, 10 yen Supplementary combinations For fine adjustments
84 yen Standard mail - basic Most common for under 25g
94 yen Standard mail - 25-50g For slightly thicker letters
120, 140 yen Non-standard mail Brochures, booklets, etc.
250, 500 yen Heavy mail Items over 2kg, etc.

Combination Tips

When combining multiple denominations, keep these points in mind for smooth post office purchases:

 • Prioritize minimum stamps: This tool displays combinations with the fewest stamps first, making purchases easier
 • Start with larger denominations: Using larger denominations like 84 or 94 yen reduces the need for smaller ones
 • Use existing stamps: Select only denominations you already have to minimize new purchases
 • Check post office inventory: Small denominations (1, 5 yen) may be out of stock, so check in advance

Sending Multiple Items

When sending multiple items of the same postage, multiply the combination calculated by this tool by the "quantity" to determine total stamps needed at once.

Example: Sending 10 items at 84 yen each
Tool calculates "84 yen = 84 yen × 1 stamp" → Actually need "84 yen × 10 = 840 yen worth of stamps"

⚙️ Calculation Techniques

Using "Common Denominations" Preset

The "Common Denominations" button automatically selects only denominations truly used in practice. This speeds up calculations and displays only practical combinations.

 • Difference from "All Denominations": Using all denominations takes longer to calculate and shows many impractical combinations
 • Recommended denominations: Common denominations like 84, 94, 120, 140 yen are pre-selected

Maximum Stamps Setting

The default is set to maximum 20 stamps. This reflects the practical reality that "few people buy more than 20 different denominations at once from the post office."

 • 20 stamps is realistic: Fine adjustments in 10-yen increments are possible, but more than 25 is rarely needed
 • Adjust as needed: For very large amounts, you can increase the number

Why Multiple Combinations Are Shown

Mathematically, there are multiple ways to make the same amount. This tool displays combinations in order of fewest stamps first, showing up to 50 combinations.

Example: For 120 yen
・84 yen + 36 yen combination... wait, 36 yen doesn't exist
・84 yen + 10 yen + 10 yen + 10 yen + 5 yen + 1 yen (actual calculation example)
・120 yen (1 stamp) ← Displayed first as it has the fewest stamps
